Singapore Fashion Week 2015 Overview

Hey ya'll,

This is going to be a very special post because the whole experience was so surreal and fascinating to be able to see seven of the shows with my own eyes. So let's cut to the chase and get into it.

SGFW was held from 13-17 May 2015 at the Tent@Orchard which was at Ngee Ann City's Civic Plaza.

Day 1: Diane Von Furstenburg Opens SGFW 2015

Fashion icon Diane Von Furstenburg opens the first day of SGFW with her Fall 2015 collection, Seduction. This collection features alluring and mystical pieces such as her iconic wrap dresses, polished power coats, and chiffon cocktail dresses. The pieces reflects a woman in command where the structured and bold pieces represent her in the day and the floral, flowy gowns by night. Her colour palette of black, white, red and blue were also very great mix to bring out the seductive, alluring vibe.

Well I have to say, DVF is so inspirational because she's 68 and still has a lot going. Like running the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) being a fashion icon herself, and of course, empowering women all over the world.

Day 2: Dzojchen by Chelsea Scott-Blackhall, Elohim by Sabrina Goh and Dion Lee

DZOJCHEN and Elohim are under the Fashion Futures programme which gives them a platform to put their designs in the global market, and also getting featured in the SGFW as well.

DZOJCHEN is a label which encapsulates juxtaposition and 'dualities within ones indiviDUALITIES'. It is a very creative phrase that I'll not forget. Scott-Blackhall's collection features pieces that have refined cuts and textures that somehow managed to form a graceful yet structured silhouette.

This has got to be my fave look. Look at how wearable it is! Picture from www.senatus.net

Elohim by Sabrina Goh is very unique. She used loose, boxy and minimalistic cuts with her red coloured print which is currently the talk of the town. She also had a few pieces that were grey and black. Such as the gothic school girl look and another set which was more toned down and for office ladies.

Don't get confused because Dion Lee's fashion base is Australia and nope, he is not Singaporean. His collection consisted of silky silhouettes with drapes and textures. There were also sharp, cut-out pieces that were intricate yet wearable. The one that caught my eye was the emerald fur coat. To be honest, it looks really comfy and stylish. If only Singapore's weather would permit to wearing that...

Day 3: Ong Shunmugam by Priscilla Shunmugam, Collate The Label by Velda Tan and Exhibit and Alt present by Charles and Keith

Ong Shunmugam is also under the Fashion Futures Programme just like Dzojchen and Elohim. Ong Shunmugam was the most unique because of the amazing blend of culture and fashion. Some of Priscilla Shunmugam's pieces followed the silhouette of a normal dress but the textures and prints were very traditional and somewhat like a hybrid of a cheongsam and a kimono as well. Very asian type of fashion which was eye-opening.

Favourite piece from her collection. The fusion of culture is excellent. Picture from www.harpersbazaar.com.sg

Velda Tan made her debut at SGFW with COLLATE The Label. She is also known as the successful 'IT' girl of Singapore right now as she was previously behind popular online womenswear store, Love, Bonito and not to mention that she's exceptionally beautiful as well. With the aesthetic approach of 'less is more', her new label weaves in classic contemporary styles with basic silhouettes that is very versatile and wearable.

Both labels, Exhibit and ALT by Curated Editions, are collaborating for the second time and this collection is presented by Charles and Keith. Yoyo Cao and Angie Lai-Tay are the designers for these respective labels. Their collection features clean cuts and monochromatic colours inspired by strong architectural silhouettes and geometric patterns. However there were few pieces with 'wool balls' that were actually quite cute with the strong silhouette as its base.

Day 4: Laselle Graduate Show, Harper's Bazaar Asia New Generation Award, Zalora presents Woo/fiziwoo and Zalia, Tex Saverio for Love, Bonito and Thakoon Panichgul

Day 4 was definitely the most eventful day with five shows altogether.

The Lasalle Grad Show gives you a glimpse of what the (near) future of fashion would bring. The designs featured were very spontaneous, quirky and eye catching.

Local designer, Sylvia Teh, wins Harper's Bazaar Asia New Generation Designer Award where designers from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore competed.

Zalora presents Woo/fiziwoo and Zalia features conservative yet loud dresses and gowns. Woo/fiziwoo were more catered towards Malays however, it is a good mix of both traditional and modern wear with the thick fabrics and peplum style. Zalia's collection featured classy and glamorous where to be honest, is not wearable in normal events but more for grand ones. Nonetheless, the collection was so beautiful with the intricate and sparkly embellishments.

Next up, Tex Saverio for Love, Bonito featured a blend of Indonesian fashion designer, Tex Saverio's structures and Love, Bonito's softness. This collection is a harmonious mix of pastel and cool grey, black and white-ish colours. It kind of reminds me of Elohim by Sabrina Goh don't you think? With the beautiful 'painted' kind of print.

Oh yes, and Tex Saverio is super amazing because he was the designer for Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen's wedding dress! He has also designed for Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga.

And finally, romantic Thakoon Panichgul is here to sweep all the fashion lovers off their feet with his innovative and textile development where his designs reflect his background: diverse. He was born in Thailand, raised in Omaha and now his fashion base is in the United States.

His collection is made up of autumn colours, elegant patterns and silhouettes with a bohemian touch to them.

Day 5: Victoria Beckham closes SGFW 2015

Victoria Beckham is finally here at SGFW. As we all know, she has transformed from a Spice Girl to a legendary fashion designer known for her edgy, body-contouring and sophisticated style. The style icon and Vogue cover girl has emerged into the fashion industry with a bang and as been an inspiration to many since then.

This year at SGFW, Beckham's Autumn/Winter 2015 collection embodies comfortable, covered-up yet sophisticated pieces in the form of oversized coats, elegant drapes and womanly silhouettes. Even though the apparel's material may seem thick and heavy, it is actually incredibly light with the intelligent play of fabrics.

This year's SGFW has been a very fulfilling one as they made it a point not to feature mainly international designers but more local designers this year. So cheers to SGFW and I'll be looking forward to Digital Fashion Week later this year!

Cheers,
Yun Rong
